Description

Our senses include seeing, smelling, touching, tasting and hearing. We use all of our senses to find out what’s happening around us and to keep us safe.

Step 1

Sit together make a list of all the textures you can think of – smooth, spikey, rough, bumpy, soft, hard, warm, cold, wet, dry, etc. Remember them or write them on a piece of paper.

Step 2

Go outside a find an object that will fit each word on your list. Pebbles may be smooth, a holly leaf may be spikey, the grass may be soft, the sun will be warm.

Step 3

Collect a selection of natural objects and lay them out. Talk about what you have found together and decide if you can assign more than one texture to each object, e.g. a leaf may be both smooth and bumpy or a pebble may be both hard and rough.

What you need

A tray or bag to collect objects in.

Try

Why not create a sensory sheet before you go out. Write or draw the symbols for each texture on a piece of paper and then stick the objects to the sheet as you go along.
